This session tells the unbelievable true story of Michael Swango, the infamous doctor-turned-serial-killer who used his credentials to gain access to patients, commit heinous acts, and how the medical community chose to turn a blind eye to his criminal activities.
This presentation will discuss how Swango's case led to increased scrutiny and more rigorous evaluations of medical professionals and prompted a reevaluation of medical staff credentialing protocols. Focus will be given to the processes which have continued to be refined to ensure only the most qualified providers are permitted to practice medicine including improvements to peer review and more stringent credentialing standards.
