Low/No Volume & Advanced Practice Providers: Best Practices for Competency & Privileging

One of the biggest challenges for a medical staff is how to evaluate low or no volume medical staff members who do not provide patient care at the hospital.

Most accreditation bodies require these providers to undergo periodic appraisals of their current clinical competency during an appropriate evaluation period. This session will discuss best practices for determining competency and granting privileges for low or no volume providers.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn methodologies for assessing the clinical competency of low-volume and no-volume providers, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements while maintaining high standards of care.
  2. Attendees will explore best practices for creating structured evaluation frameworks tailored to providers who do not regularly engage in patient care, facilitating a fair and comprehensive appraisal process.
  3. Participants will gain insights into the process of granting privileges to low-volume and no-volume providers, focusing on aligning privileges with individual competency assessments and organizational needs.

Survey Readiness

Preparing for a regulatory survey can be a daunting, and at times, overwhelming task; but there are steps you can take to help your organization prepare and face the surveyors with confidence. This presentation focuses on successfully navigating surveyor expectations, tips, and best practices to prepare for a regulatory visit, including how to successfully prepare the medical staff session prior to the survey for better outcomes. From finding the tools needed, to prepping credentialing files and addressing findings, this session is aimed to arm participants with confidence when you hear, “They’re Here!”.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify, and articulate key expectations surveyors have during regulatory visits.
  2. Attendees will learn best practices for preparing their organization and medical staff for regulatory surveys to improve compliance and outcomes.
  3. Participants will gain skills in organizing and maintaining credentialing files to ensure readiness for accreditation and regulatory audits.

Addressing Provider Professionalism Concerns

This session discusses the challenges associated with provider professionalism concerns, the consequences to other staff members, and the impact on patient care. The presenters will address key components and effective use of professional conduct policies. We will also share tips for conducting collegial conversations including the roles of the physician leader and Medical Staff Professional.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify and analyze the challenges associated with provider professionalism concerns, including their effects on team dynamics and the overall quality of patient care within healthcare settings.
  2. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of key components of professional conduct policies and their effective implementation, enabling them to navigate and uphold standards of professionalism within their organization.
  3. Learners will develop skills for conducting effective collegial conversations, including understanding the roles of physician leaders and Medical Services Professionals in addressing professionalism issues, fostering a constructive dialogue to promote improvement and accountability.
